HIGHER LANDS DIORAMA

This sculptural installation explores lichens and moss. Lichens are organisms formed through a symbiotic relationship between fungi and algae or cyanobacteria. The fungi provide protection and nutrients, while their photosynthetic partners generate carbohydrates. Moss and lichen ecosystems thrive together, with moss retaining water, providing substrate, and supporting soil formation and nutrient cycling.

Many lichens grow extremely slowly, some older than any human alive, embodying an ancient ecological equilibrium. Placed within a Menhir surrounded by floating rocks, the work evokes nature’s sacred rituals and highlights the interdependence and resilience of species across time. The installation made with recycled metal, recycled rope, and recycled textiles, is located on the East coast of Taiwan, where the sea breeze is always present, bringing constant moisture to the land.

All the fabric is repurposed material donated by Yee Chain International Co.

This installation and its construction methods are original artistic expressions developed by Lua Rivera as part of the Rivera Rhizomatic Construction Method.
