ODD

Odd, 2015. Single socks. Variable measures. ¨RawBox Center¨, Tepoztlan, Morelos, Mexico.

“This installation and its construction methods are original artistic expressions developed by Lua Rivera.”

ODD tells the story of a hidden place, impossible to access for anyone who is not a sock or a pair of tights. “Sock’s Paradise” is a privileged destination to which socks migrate in search of everything they need to be happy. The legend is passed down by parents and celebrated by each new generation, mirroring the deeply human desire to escape in search of a better future. During this epic journey, many socks are discovered hiding in obscure places, while others are lost along the way. Nevertheless, thousands undertake this great exodus toward paradise, where they live life to the fullest in the company of other similar beings.

Within this peculiar colony, every guest is unique in both form and personality. Socks, stockings, and tights coexist in a society of odd objects that become individuals—beings freed from their original function and role.

The project began with a personal gesture: I started saving odd socks, hoping that one day I would find their missing pairs. This never happened. Instead, I began to research what other people thought and experienced around this shared phenomenon. As I collected their stories, I also collected their odd socks, transforming a common domestic frustration into a collective narrative.

Over time, the collective imagination surrounding the project grew and evolved into an audio piece, while the socks were hand-stitched together, one by one, expanding each week like a living organism. Every sock was different, carrying its own story, written or implied in the fabric. All of them are survivors of a disposal system, rescued from being thrown away and integrated into a single, flexible community capable of adapting to and inhabiting any surface.

ODD is an interdisciplinary, process-based project that began in 2012. The textile installation consists of a modular structure in continuous growth and transformation. It is presented alongside video projections, texts, illustrations, and audio elements that document and reflect on the ongoing process, emphasizing themes of loss, belonging, migration, and collective identity.
